Our paternal guidance and grooming put us on a straight and narrow path toward good but today’s society puts up many roadblocks and detours. These outside factors are gaining strength daily while we as a people slowly allow the bad, or evil to creep into every avenue of our lives seemingly unnoticed. We have lowered our standards so much that we hardly recognize good from bad anymore. As this has happened the moral fabric of America has frayed to the point that it’s nothing more then a useless rag. Behaviors and actions that were once looked down upon are now acceptable. Personal accountability is non existent and decency is a thing of the past. Respect for self and others have diminished considerably in past decades. All this because the collective opinion has become, “well that’s the way it is, what can you do about it”! Very few want to stand up and say, STOP, nothing good can come of the destruction of good decent values.
When people lose sight of what’s good and bad, behaviors change for the worse. People ignore rules and laws, they become complacent and lazy in many ways, they have to be protected from themselves and it follows that others have to be protected as well from the harm they cause. So what does this mean? It means that government has to step in, laws have to be made to restrain these individuals and programs have to be implemented to address issues that arise and so on and so on…
Our failure to understand the connection between moral concerns and limited government has helped to perpetuate the moral decline in this country and fed the growth of unwanted government involvement. The more we slip into a passive nation where unacceptable behaviors are more acceptable and almost welcomed the more government can become intrusive into our lives. Until we realize that we need to be responsible for our actions and teach our children to do the same we will continue to fall. If we continue to elect officials who will take every opportunity to strip away your liberties and freedoms by control and power over us under the guise of “compassionate governing”, then nothing will change and our future looks dim.
I’ve heard some say that you need to keep certain aspects out of the political system. Some think that morals and decency are individual choices rather then a concept a Nation or government should embrace. My personal opinion of those who think this way is that they are most certainly mistaken and I’ll tell you why.
Brought up with conservative beliefs, traditional values and a deep faith in God, I’ve always known the difference between good and bad. Being human I have had to work hard at being good, but not always getting the job accomplished. People in general are born with an instinct to be good, we have a built in mechanism called a conscience that tries to keep us in line. However, there are outside factors that interfere with that conscience and dull it to the point where we no longer feel that “twinge” that tries to alert us to our impending personal failings.
One way to begin to affect a positive change toward a moral and just nation with limited government is to start electing officials who have a good moral understanding and live by it daily. I believe this important and vital change will be beneficial to all Americans and bring back the America we once new that is worthy of passing on to our children, grandchildren and all future generations to come. That very same American future our forefathers started and passed onto us!
