A recurring theme in Scripture is the need to pass responsibility on, from one person to another.
- Moses led the Israelites out of a life of slavery in Egypt. Moses then passed the “baton” to Joshua whom God had chosen to lead the Israelites out of the wilderness and into the Promised Land.
- The Prophet Elijah passed the baton to the Prophet Elisha. God used Elijah to rid the Israelites of the 450 false prophets of Asherah who ate at Jezebel’s table.
- Jesus Christ Himself had to pass the baton on to the 11 remaining faithful Apostles who became the very foundation of the Christian Church. Jesus Christ had fulfilled his purpose; by His life, death, burial and resurrection He conquered sin and death and provided a way of eternal salvation for the world. (See 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4)
- The Apostle Paul was also passionate about passing the baton. To his understudy Timothy he wrote, “The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2 Emphasis mine)
At COIPAC we also believe in the “passing of the baton”….by politicians. We believe in the “2 and up or 2 and out rule”. After two terms in office a leader should be willing and ready to pass the baton. When leadership sits long it becomes stagnant and harmful. Washington is too filled with politicians who need to “pass the baton”. They have sat too long and dare I say have become harmful…even dangerous. Seemingly, politicians in Washington are more interested in their special interest groups (Have you seen the pork barrel spending numbers?) than a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” The number of carreer politicians in Washington is staggering.
I was recently perusing the list of Congressmen, Congresswomen and Senators currently serving their terms in Washington. This list is on the COIPAC web site. There is a column on this web page designated for asking these politicians to pledge the COIPAC principle; 2 and up or 2 and out rule.
At the time of this writing not one politician in Washington has made this pledge. Perhaps they are not yet aware of COIPAC. Perhaps they have heard of us, but have a comfortable living and enjoy benefitting from your tax dollars. Or maybe they are still trying to decide what is best for their political future. Who knows? One thing we know for sure is; you and I need to get the word out. Tell your family, tell your friends. Incumbency is not the answer~Passing the Baton is.
There is no stronger statement that you can make than the one you make at the ballot box. Are you registered to vote? Please honor the men and women who have sacrificed their lives so that you and I can vote. Voting is one of the greatest privileges and responsibilities of every American citizen. We need to vote out these career politicians. These career politicians need to pass the baton.

Our paternal guidance and grooming put us on a straight and narrow path toward good but today’s society puts up many roadblocks and detours. These outside factors are gaining strength daily while we as a people slowly allow the bad, or evil to creep into every avenue of our lives seemingly unnoticed. We have lowered our standards so much that we hardly recognize good from bad anymore. As this has happened the moral fabric of America has frayed to the point that it’s nothing more then a useless rag. Behaviors and actions that were once looked down upon are now acceptable. Personal accountability is non existent and decency is a thing of the past. Respect for self and others have diminished considerably in past decades. All this because the collective opinion has become, “well that’s the way it is, what can you do about it”! Very few want to stand up and say, STOP, nothing good can come of the destruction of good decent values.
When people lose sight of what’s good and bad, behaviors change for the worse. People ignore rules and laws, they become complacent and lazy in many ways, they have to be protected from themselves and it follows that others have to be protected as well from the harm they cause. So what does this mean? It means that government has to step in, laws have to be made to restrain these individuals and programs have to be implemented to address issues that arise and so on and so on…
Our failure to understand the connection between moral concerns and limited government has helped to perpetuate the moral decline in this country and fed the growth of unwanted government involvement. The more we slip into a passive nation where unacceptable behaviors are more acceptable and almost welcomed the more government can become intrusive into our lives. Until we realize that we need to be responsible for our actions and teach our children to do the same we will continue to fall. If we continue to elect officials who will take every opportunity to strip away your liberties and freedoms by control and power over us under the guise of “compassionate governing”, then nothing will change and our future looks dim.
I’ve heard some say that you need to keep certain aspects out of the political system. Some think that morals and decency are individual choices rather then a concept a Nation or government should embrace. My personal opinion of those who think this way is that they are most certainly mistaken and I’ll tell you why.
Brought up with conservative beliefs, traditional values and a deep faith in God, I’ve always known the difference between good and bad. Being human I have had to work hard at being good, but not always getting the job accomplished. People in general are born with an instinct to be good, we have a built in mechanism called a conscience that tries to keep us in line. However, there are outside factors that interfere with that conscience and dull it to the point where we no longer feel that “twinge” that tries to alert us to our impending personal failings.
One way to begin to affect a positive change toward a moral and just nation with limited government is to start electing officials who have a good moral understanding and live by it daily. I believe this important and vital change will be beneficial to all Americans and bring back the America we once new that is worthy of passing on to our children, grandchildren and all future generations to come. That very same American future our forefathers started and passed onto us!

I believe that I am guaranteed and have the freedom under the United States Constitution to provide verifiable information about politicians who may be running for elected office to the public. In fact it is my privilege and responsibility as an American citizen. Our government is a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Merely looking at a particular politician’s voting record will tell us a lot about the character of that person and what they really believe in.
During the 2008 General Election, churches were “warned” that they could not discuss information regarding political candidates to their congregants from the pulpit. Fair enough, BUT if they even discussed a particular candidate they would be dangerously close to violating their nonprofit status and possibly even lose that status. Allegedly the reason cited was that the 1st Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibited such practices because of the “separation of church and state”.
Now I am no expert on the Constitution, but I have read it several times however, I do not recall “separation of church and state” in the 1st Amendment or anywhere in the United States Constitution. Here is the 1st Amendment, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
I knew I was correct. “Separation of church and state” is not in the 1st Amendment, so where did it come from? According to Wikipedia, “…the phrase “separation of church and state” is generally traced to an 1802 letter by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists, where Jefferson spoke of the combined effect of the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment.”
Now, while may agree that the pulpit may not be the proper platform for political campaigning, it is certainly not because of the 1st Amendment. In fact, I believe the 1st Amendment states that we have freedom “of” religion not freedom “from” religion and this, at the very least, guarantees our freedom of speech. There are rules and regulations however that vary from state to state which determine a church’s nonprofit status, largely these laws refer to their tax status. I have often wondered how Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s church; Trinity United Church of Christ retained their nonprofit tax exempt status. The sermons I’ve heard him preach in that church’s pulpit were obviously politically charged. I also understand that he was part of the “Barack Obama for President Campaign” in 2008. I wonder if Trinity United got the “warning”.
According to the Bible, in Acts chapter 6, a Pastor’s primary responsibility is the ministry of the word and prayer. This means simply to teach and pray for those who are put under his charge. In 1st Peter 5 and Acts 20, the Apostles Peter and Paul both commanded pastors to “shepherd” the flock of God. When The Apostle Paul was departing the church in Ephesus for good, his charge to the remaining pastors there is recorded in Acts 20:28-30, “Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.” Now in all fairness a good bible teacher will teach that this in its context would be a reference to men coming in the church and teaching false doctrine among other things, and they would be correct. However, as in all of Scripture there may be one truth with many applications.
But what is the application here? As a pastor I am responsible at the very least to protect the people put under my charge from people who distort the truth. Can you think of any politicians who may distort the truth? It seems in this day and age the “spin” is all that matters. Does the truth matter anymore? To this Pastor it does matter.
In this light: Will I “endorse” a particular candidate from the pulpit? No, I will not. If my counsel is sought however regarding my knowledge of a particular candidate or my convictions about them: I will speak because I must speak. I am confident and comfortable in sharing my views because of the guarantee in the 1st Amendment of the United States Constitution and it is my charge as a Pastor to keep watch over my flock. As their pastor I have a responsibility to protect them from distortion of the truth no matter its source. Yes, I will speak.

Jeff encourages all Americans to Join COI-PAC and be a part of this citizen based Grass Roots organization to end the #1 problem in our Government: Self Perpetuating Career Politicians and their obscene terms of incumbency.

As the founder and ED of COI-PAC I am obviously passionate about this organization and our mission. In honor of Pastor Tom’s first weekly blog article, I am putting on the preacher’s hat for my article this week and going back into time…….
The year is 1981 and I am a very active member of my church’s youth group which has been growing at great strides in the most recent two years. Our youth group at the First Christian Church of Lansing, Illinois is up to approximately 25 kids. In a church with a membership of perhaps 100 adults, this is a great youth group! In fact this is a social and worship group as we all are basically best friends. Many of these same people are my facebook friends today!
Anyway, on the 4th Sunday evening of each month, the youth group is in charge of the service. In charge means not only song worship, but offering, communion and the sermon. We all dreaded the day we had to give the sermon, but this particular service I drew the short straw and had to give the sermon. My message was taken from the following passage: How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation? (Hebrews 2:3).
I recall the message was focused on the urgency to make a decision in accepting Christ if indeed you knew him and the gift he gave us by paying the debt of our sins. I also recall a story I related of a great war-battle in which one army fleeing the opposing Army while following a river path chose to not cross at the first opportunity to ford the river opting instead to wait for an easier crossing. This decision was repeated multiple times until finally they found themselves at a sharp turn in the river. The opposing Army was closing quickly and the river was too wide to ford at the turn which trapped them. The fleeing army was destroyed. They failed to accept the opportunity to save their lives by fording the river at the previous crossings presented.
In much the same way, the message: “How shall we escape, if we neglect …” can be applied to the Citizens Opposing Incumbency today. We have the opportunity today, unlike any in the history of our country, to finally rally all the disenfranchised, disgruntled and ignored citizens of the country to work with a common cause of saving ourselves from the government who continues to cause us to flee along the river… passing the opportunity to ford “The river of out of control power seeking career incumbents” who strip away more of our liberties, freedoms and opportunities with each election cycle.
We choose to neglect the opportunity to accept our salvation at the ballot box to change the direction our life is heading and to improve our future, in fact the eternity of our country (at least as eternal as the world can be described as). How shall we escape if we neglect this opportunity to unite as regular citizens and “take back our government”. How shall we escape if we continue to neglect the opportunity to demand and vote for a government of the people, by the people and for the people? How shall we escape if we choose to do nothing but to continue with business as usual?
Like Salvation in the Christian faith: the opportunity to make a decision is only limited by your limited time, which you alone do not control. Let’s not leave it to others to make the decision to join COI-PAC and take a stand to make a change. We may be near that last opportunity to ford the river flowing with the power which has been taken from the people. I for one will not stay on the current course. If I must cross alone, at least I have not neglected the opportunity for my salvation from the current state of our government much in the same way my decision to no longer neglect the salvation Christ offered was one taken alone, by myself. Won’t you, today, make the decision to do your part to save ourselves from obscene incumbency and the chance of government tyranny? Won’t you join COI-PAC today and no longer neglect what is put before you?

As a little kid, one of my favorite things to do was attend auctions. I absolutely loved it. Right in line with circus workers, carnival barkers and professional wrestlers, auctioneers are truly some of our country’s greatest entertainers. They are a throwback to the days of old, when men used their wit, wisdom, smooth tongue and a hint of showmanship to produce revenue.
I stopped spending time at auctions several years ago: primarily because I simply ran out of free time. Last week though I decided to attend one. I quickly fell back in love with the whole spectacle. The auctioneer making the call, prodding the bidder to pay more than they want, as he pits two men against each other in hopes of gaining the prize. It was fabulous.
At auctions there are what are known as Ringmen. A Ringman’s job is simple: Take an item up to the auctioneer, display the item for the crowd, then holler “Yep!” when a bid is placed. In entertainment terms: Scan the crowd, find the pigeon, and scream with enthusiasm as though you are very excited this person is deciding to spend more money on the item. The Ringman has no idea why you are bidding on the item. He does not care. He just knows you are bidding on it, it’s more money in his company’s pocket, and when he sees you make the sign he is supposed to blindly holler, “Yep!“
As I watched the Ringmen operate I began to think about how much our society has become a bunch of Ringmen, willing to defy common sense and logic, in the name of supporting a political party or ideology. Think about it. What has our country been doing the past decade? Our government has grown by leaps and bounds. They have stolen our liberty, depleted our treasure and refused to embrace basic traditions and ideals that have sustained us for the past 235 years. Yet we as an educated people choose to act like Ringmen. We don’t question. We don’t wonder. We don’t investigate. We simply see the metaphorical hand of the Republican or Democratic Party go up and we holler “Yep!”
President Obama chooses to print one trillion dollars. He gives no blue print as to what jobs will be created, how the money will be spent, or how to avoid the unavoidable blow back of inflation. Yet we as a society overwhelmingly hollered, “Yep!” Same thing with health care. No plan on how to pay for it. No evidence it will improve care. Nothing other than vague platitudes to appeal to people’s emotions. Yet 45 percent of the country still is blindly hollering, “Yep!”
Republicans were equally as guilty under President Bush. An education bill that spent billions of dollars we didn’t have, while managing to make kids robots and strip teachers of their local freedoms to best educate kids? “Yep!” A war in Iraq with no plan to win, no plan to leave, and no plan to keep the peace? “Yep!” Billions of dollars to thieves, crooks, and losers on Wall Street? “Yep!”
The list is endless for both sides. We as a society have become nothing but a bunch of Ringmen. You make the call Mr. President. And if you have the same name letter next to your name as I do mine, I will blindly obey and holler, “Yep!” I implore our nation to stop being a bunch of Ringmen. Look past the rhetoric. Start asking questions. Start holding BOTH SIDES accountable. D and R are just meaningless letters. U S A are the three that really matter. And if we keep saying “Yep!” because of the former, soon the latter won’t be worth saving.

“How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don’t think.” ~Adolf Hitler
If you take just a moment to consider and analyze your public servants, in both the state and Federal Congress, you will likely find that they more often “tell” us what is right rather than “ask” us what is right. In these cases, they are really not being a valuable public servant, or you can say, a poor service provider. It is our choice and responsibility as citizens to hold our public servants responsible for their actions, just like you hold your mechanic accountable for his actions.
Your mechanic perhaps tells you, after the service is completed, “Oh, I went ahead and changed your air filter because I thought you would want me to. I know you do not work on cars so you are not very good at making these decisions.” Would you feel that that mechanic provided you a valuable service or perhaps did he just spent your money by presuming he is better fit to make such decisions for you? Since it is our car, and our decision weather to spend additional money on it, how can we assume he has provided us a good service?
Our mechanic, like our public servants should act in a way that will earn our trust by making responsible decisions based on our needs, not his opinion of our needs. Our Congress continues to believe that they are all knowing of what is best for us and in recent days, seems so convinced of this that our opinions do not matter it seems.
Here are a few:
- Cap and Trade: our service providers did not allow us (or themselves) to read and understand the plan.
- Stimulus: We have to pass it now or the world will end. Did we as the stakeholders even get a chance to comment on what was happening?
- Gitmo: We are closing it. Where will the criminals go, who will support them, will this benefit any community, Were we consulted on what we wanted to do?
The examples abound and only exemplify that our public servants do not do what we want, but rather what they believe will benefit us.
After all, we “the people they administer don’t think” Or do we………..

I was driving through the great state of North Carolina yesterday, when I came upon an interesting sign on the highway. It was a sign relaying that there was work ahead. But the sign didn’t indicate a need for caution, to slow down, or drive carefully. Rather it touted the project’s financial backers: The United States Government. The sign stated “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009: Putting Americans Back To Work.”
Fair enough: Finally proof of our stimulus money hard at work. But then that sign got me thinking about a few things:
1) I saw no actual work being done. For the next several miles, where one would assume the work would be happening since there was a sign indicating as such, I saw nothing. No workers, no cranes, no bulldozers, no shovels: Nothing. Which has to make one stop and wonder why? Why would there be a sign and no proof of work? Was the work already done? If so that didn’t create too many long term jobs. Or will the work be done in the future? If so, that’s not putting any immediate money in any normal American pockets (the purpose of the bill). If that area was any indication of the amount of people being put back to “work” I think the government may want to rethink their strategy.
2) The project the money was going to was not identified. How do I know if that was a good use of taxpayer dollars? Was the work being paid for legit? Was it for vital road improvements like fixing a bridge or filling in cracks and potholes? Or was it just money being handed out to friends of those who have supported the right government officials? I would think the government would be far better served on the sign to actually identify what the project is. That way the public can judge as they drive by, if a “stimulus” is really occurring.
3) The signs themselves seem to be questionable. How much did that sign cost? Multiply that sign by the number of signs posted across the country. That seems like a lot of money. Money that could have gone to put food on the tables of the families the government says they want to help through the “stimulus.”
4) Finally, I asked myself this question: Do I know even one person who has been hired, and upon being hired, was told is was only because of this “Stimulus Bill?” The answer is no. And I would be willing to take a guess that you, the reader would have a hard time answering yes to the question as well.
So a half year after the stimulus was signed into law, I am beginning to question its effectiveness. Where are the “shovel ready” jobs? Who is being hired for the “shovel ready” jobs? Certainly not my friends. A coincidence? Perhaps. But I have a feeling that they aren’t your friends either. Or your friends, friends. I would like more open dialogue from our elected officials on where the money is going. Who is being hired and what are they being hired to do? Because those signs that are supposed to be providing clarity, just left me with more questions.

Surely everyone has heard the phrase “power corrupts and obsolete power corrupts absolutely”. This is a fact that has been known for years, but is seldom acted upon. Why do we, the voters, voluntarily decide to keep people in office that are known to be corrupt? Why, when we want change, do we make elect to offices people who we know will not promote change?
One thing has become obvious to me as I have become more active in politics, it is not a party problem, it is a people problem. We, the people, are so stuck on the idea that we have to pick from a party, a democrat or a republican, that we fail to see who the people are that are actually running for the office. We must look beyond what party do people belong to, and look at what values do these people bring to the table.
Career politicians rarely bring a lot to the table since they are mostly interested in the power that it brings to them. Examples are not hard to find on any side of the table. Republicans or Democrats, Libertarians or Independents, it does not matter, if you give someone continued and uninterrupted power you will receive corruption.
John Adams presented this quote in 1765. “The jaws of power are always open to devour, and her arm is always stretched out, if possible, to destroy the freedom of thinking, speaking, and writing.” Doesn’t this remind you of anything that may be happening today? How many freedoms and liberties are at stake because of who is in office?
We have put our trust in the parties instead of electing trustworthy people to government. We must look at who is in the offices and demand that they are not becoming the corrupt powers that will eventually grasp our freedoms. We must take control of our government offices and elect people that are by the people to serve for the people and be willing to move up the political ladder that is decided by the people. The people are the key to taking America back.
Take a close look at your public servants. If they are passionate about staying where they are in office, ask yourself why. In most cases it is not to serve the people, but to embolden the power they have received over the years. Remember, power corrupts and obsolete power corrupts absolutely.

Dear friend:
Firstly I want to apologize for this appearing to be an impersonal form letter. I call you friend because you are, but in haste I must send this plea to many friends.
As you are aware, I have recently formed an organization with a mission to demand better governance from our elected officials. We intend to accomplish this by ending Self Perpetuating Career Politicians’ advantage and lifetime seats in Congress. We see that the #1 problem, which is the root cause of all that is wrong in our government, is this obscene incumbency. There is no accountability and typically the voters are not presented with a choice against these incumbents. Our organization is named Citizens Opposing Incumbency (COI-PAC).
This organization is being structured as a non profit organization which will allow us to accept donations from individuals, businesses and other organizations; however I have maintained that we DO NOT desire any special interest, business or organized donations for our COI-PAC. In order to maintain purity in our mission, we must do this as individual citizens. Thus we need Americans, across the country to join us. Our funding to combat career politicians will come from individuals’ membership fees only and these fees are only $25/year.
Considering that the average congressman spends between $700K-$1 million for re-election, you can easily understand that the only way we can hope to achieve our goals is to have millions of members. Our process will be to engage every Congressman (and Senator) to inform them that their extended incumbency is morally wrong, selfish, and egotistic and that it is a disservice to their constituents and our country by making government stagnant, devoid of fresh ideas and almost always causes outside influence and corruption to occur.
They will be asked to not seek further terms in their current office if they have already served 12 years. Based on a US Senator’s term this is 2 terms. COI-PAC has coined the phrase, “2 AND UP or 2 AND OUT” meaning that it is perfectly acceptable to COI-PAC for a politician to ask for election to a “higher” office after the 2 terms in the current office are completed. His/her efforts and diligence while in that office will determine if the constituency allows this next career move. It is unacceptable however for any politician to serve more than 12 years in an office.
We will request all candidates to sign a 2 and up-2 and out pledge. Those that refuse will be our targets. We should not send career politicians to Washington, regardless of party affiliation, ever. According to our plan, we will be able to accomplish our goals if our membership of like minded Americans grows to 10 million. In the 2008 election, 110 million (roughly) voters cast ballots. We need 1 out of 10 voters to join us. This in a staggering number to contemplate, but one out of 10 is not. In that light, I am requesting you to become a COI-PAC member, “Right Now” and to ask 10 family members or friends to join us as well and if that 1 new member asks 10 friends, like the old Faberge commercial: “and so on and so on…” We can grow virally to 10,000,000 members before the next General Election in 2010 and be capable of removing these self-perpetuating politicians starting immediately!
With your help and your support and your shameless promotion of our cause, we can do this. The first step is to become a paid member of COI-PAC and then invite 10 others and continue to speak about the mission of COI-PAC to everyone, everywhere. In the Declaration of Independence it states, “experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. “
I believe we no longer need to “suffer the sufferable” and I am prepared to work “to right ourselves by abolishing the form we are accustomed” by eliminating the self perpetuation of career politicians. If you agree, won’t you please join us today? I cannot do this alone, nor can you, however: together we can forge a Patriotic Movement that will be an unstoppable force of Citizens demanding honest Government and assuring it by actively working against the #1 cause of all corruption, indifference and arrogance of our government: Incumbency.
